It is ambiguous whether the "venomous feeling out of" Giovanni's heart is an effect of the poison or a trait which has always been there. The question is whether Giovanni, a "normal" young man, is at heart more poisonous than the innocent Beatrice, who has become tainted biologically through her father's experiments.
